AI in journalism poses challenges related to accuracy and ethical considerations

In a recent CNN report on MSN's AI news aggregation model, several troubling instances of editorial decisions were highlighted. These included stories falsely claiming that President Joe Biden fell asleep during a moment of silence for Maui wildfire victims and an obituary that inexplicably referred to an NBA player as "useless." Such questionable choices, which would likely have been caught by human editors, raise concerns about the effectiveness of Microsoft's AI system, which replaced human efforts with algorithms a few years ago.

These issues extend beyond Microsoft, as AI is increasingly integrated into journalism practices. Other organizations like the BBC and Macworld are conducting AI experiments, and The Associated Press has been utilizing AI for "Automated Insights" for years. However, recent examples of error-riddled Star Wars stories and misguided financial advice delivered by chatbots highlight the limitations of AI in journalism. Despite presenting Microsoft Start and MSN as resources for real news, their automated systems continue to produce content with problematic language and outright falsehoods, leaving little indication of accountability in the process, with software and spokespeople seemingly indifferent to these issues.
