Google is set to invest $2 billion in OpenAI competitor Anthropic
This investment comes as the demand for large language models is rapidly increasing
Google has confirmed its plans to invest up to $2 billion in Anthropic, an artificial intelligence startup founded by former executives of OpenAI. This investment includes an initial cash infusion of $500 million, with an additional $1.5 billion to be invested gradually over time.
Anthropic is known for developing Claude 2, a chatbot that competes with OpenAI's ChatGPT. In addition to Google, Anthropic has received funding from Salesforce and Zoom, valuing the company at $4.1 billion earlier this year. Claude 2 has a unique capability to summarize lengthy texts, making it a valuable tool for various applications.
Anthropic's founders, including Dario Amodei, the former vice president of research at OpenAI, and his sister Daniela Amodei, who served as OpenAI's vice president of safety and policy, have assembled a team of 30 to 35 people to develop their chatbot.
The AI model was created with the support of a total of 150 people. This investment comes as the demand for large language models is rapidly increasing, and Anthropic believes there is substantial room for growth and success in the market due to this high demand.
