Tech companies in the EU caution against excessive regulation of AI
A group of 33 technology companies signed a letter warning European Union regulators against excessive regulation of emerging AI technologies
A joint letter has been issued by a group of technology companies to European Union regulators, warning against excessive regulation of powerful artificial intelligence systems at the expense of innovation. The letter, signed by 33 companies operating in the European Union, emphasizes the importance of not imposing overly strict laws on foundational models like ChatGPT from OpenAI and General Purpose Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), as such regulations could hinder progress and innovation in this field.
The letter also highlights that a very small percentage of companies in Europe currently use artificial intelligence, posing a challenge to achieving the European Commission's goal of increasing AI usage to 75% by 2030, and most major AI companies worldwide are not based in the European Union. The letter concludes by urging regulators not to impose regulations before giving companies the opportunity to expand and evolve in this field, and not to force them to leave.
